What is padel? A complete guide for beginners

Padel is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world right now. Not everyone knows it yet, but that is changing fast. If you're looking for a sport that blends movement, fun, and genuine social connection, you're in the right place. This guide covers what padel is, how the basic rules work, and what you need before your first match.

Padel in a nutshell

Padel is a dynamic racket sport played on an enclosed court smaller than a tennis court. Glass walls and a metal mesh fence surround the playing area, with a net running across the middle. The walls aren't just a backdrop — they're a core part of the game. You can play the ball off them, which makes padel feel unlike any other racket sport.

The rules are straightforward. You always play doubles, two players against two. Scoring works the same way as tennis: 15, 30, 40, game, set, match. You serve underarm, and after the ball bounces, it can come off the wall and still be in play. That's really all you need to know before your first match.

Why people get hooked

Padel is incredibly easy to enjoy from day one, even if you've never picked up a racket. The racket is light and easy to handle, the court is compact, and the walls keep the ball in play longer. Long rallies happen naturally, even for total beginners.

At the same time, padel has real depth. The more you play, the more you discover: wall play, positioning, doubles tactics. Players who've been on the court for years are still finding new layers to the game.

There's also a strong social side. You always need four people, which makes padel a natural fit for time with friends or a great way to meet new ones. People don't just come to play. They come to connect.

What you need to get started

Your gear list is short. Here's what you actually need:

  • Racket. A padel racket has no strings and a solid, perforated face. It's designed for control and easy handling. We'll have quality rackets ready to borrow at reception when we open.

  • Balls. Similar to tennis balls but with slightly lower pressure for better control. You'll be able to grab them at our desk.

  • Footwear. A clean-soled sports shoe with good grip works well. Court-specific or artificial turf shoes are ideal.

  • Clothing. Anything you move comfortably in. No dress code, no complications.
